Two used cars of the same model, age and mileage can be priced hundreds or even thousands of pounds apart.

Which features add the most to a used car's price?

An automatic gearbox adds more to a used car's price than any other feature. The same car is priced 13.5% higher as an automatic. On a £15,000 car, that's about £2,020. The next biggest feature, a sporty trim, adds less than half as much.

So if you're choosing between 2 otherwise similar cars, an automatic gearbox matters more than anything else on the spec sheet. Finding one isn't hard, either, because 58% of the cars in these ads are automatics. Our pick of the cheapest automatic cars in the UK is a good place to start.

Four other features each add £300 or more to a £15,000 car, and they justify a higher asking price by roughly these amounts:

  • Sporty trim (M Sport, S line, AMG Line, ST-Line and similar): +6.0%, about £900
  • Panoramic sunroof: +4.0%, about £600
  • Heated steering wheel: +3.2%, about £490
  • Privacy glass: +2.3%, about £340

Say a dealer asks £1,500 more because a car has a panoramic sunroof. That's well over double the £600 a panoramic sunroof typically adds.

Which features add only a little to a used car's price?

LED headlights, adaptive cruise control and a reversing camera are nice to have, but each adds less than £250 to a £15,000 car:

  • LED headlights: +1.5%, about £230
  • Adaptive cruise control: +1.4%, about £200
  • Reversing camera: +1.0%, about £150

So don't let a small feature like a reversing camera tip you towards a car that suits you less in other ways.

Do leather, sat nav and heated seats make a used car more expensive?

No, leather, sat nav and heated seats don't make a used car more expensive, because none of them adds a measurable amount to the price. Smartphone mirroring is the same, and all 4 differences are too small to tell from chance:

  • Heated seats: +0.9%
  • Smartphone mirroring (Apple CarPlay or Android Auto): +0.3%
  • Leather seats: −0.3%
  • Sat nav: −0.5%

So why do cars with leather or sat nav often look pricier? A car with one feature usually has others fitted, too, and those other features push the price up.

Without adjusting for other features, a car with leather costs 1.0% more. A car with sat nav costs 0.6% more. Hold everything else the same, though, and both add nothing.

Don't pay extra for leather, sat nav, smartphone mirroring or heated seats on their own. And if a seller points to the leather or sat nav to justify the price, look at what else the car has, because that's what you're paying for.

Where do these figures come from?

We analysed 41,298 used cars listed for sale between June and October 2026. The cars covered 485 models, and all of them were 1 to 10 years old.

We priced each feature by comparing like with like. That means the same model, fuel, gearbox, body style, engine size, age and mileage, once with the feature and once without. We also measured all the features together, so a car isn't credited for one feature just because it usually comes with others.

A figure of +13.5% means the same car is priced 13.5% higher with that feature. Where a gap was too small to tell from chance, we've treated the feature as adding nothing. Every figure held up when we checked it on 2 separate halves of the data, so none of them is a fluke.

The pound examples use a £15,000 car, roughly the typical price of a used car in our sample. If you're still working out a budget, our guide to how much to spend on a car can help.

We took features such as heated seats from the wording of 24,860 ads. Ads leave things out, so a car whose listing doesn't mention heated seats may still have them.

Final words

Of all the features we priced, an automatic gearbox moves a used car's price the most, by about £2,020 on a £15,000 car.

A sporty trim, panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel or privacy glass adds a few hundred pounds each, so don't accept much more than that. Leather, sat nav, smartphone mirroring, heated seats and colour shouldn't move the price you agree to at all.

Whatever the ad says, check the car itself before you buy. A feature missing from the listing may still be fitted, and a feature the ad mentions only counts if it's there and working. While you're at it, an HPI check will flag any problems in the car's history.
